What is the best way to use Spine animation outside of games - for typical 4k or HD video formats.
I see it can export quicktime. But there is no "3840x2160" or "1920x1080" stage that allows you to plan the scene properly?

Is there a way to output for this purpose?

What is the best way to import storyboard images or video for reference in the background during animation?

I know Spine is specifically for games. But the animation and mesh tools are great for other animation as well, and I was surprised that some of these common tools like a sized stage were entirely unavailable.

You can:

  • create a clipping around the scene exactly of that size (here's a tip on how to do it easily: Spine Tips: 57 clipping vertex paste )
  • import an image that acts as frame and put it on top
  • export exactly at that size by specifying it in the video export settings, you can also cut the sceneto your preferred bounds Export - Spine User Guide: MOV

Import the images in Spine like you would for other images, but uncheck their export and select options in the tree properties of the elements to avoid clicking or exporting them.

Btw you may want to have a look here, as they ended up making a whole kids show in Spine 😃

This is a great start.
I was already thinking along these lines. With a frame layer, or a clipping mask. So this is great.

What I did for the movie was set the frame layer as noted. I anchored it to the 0,0 position.
And it is set to not render.
When I export the movie I fit it to 1920x1080, and I crop the export at 0,0,1920,1080.
Works like a charm.

Now I just need to figure out importing in the animatic, video, etc. for reference. Not sure if it's just image references, or if I can import in video, but I'll research and test that too, unless you know???? Does an mp4 import in using the image folder?

Thanks a ton!
New to SPINE but see a lot of potential!!!!

You need to import a sequence of images, video imports are not supported in Spine.
Here's something to make your life easier in that regard: (look at ePrime's comment with the utility!)
