With Spine open, on a Mac, in the terminal, enter:
open -n -a "Spine"
This will open a second instance, allowing you to compare skeleton trees before importing one in to the other

Yes, unless you run Spine as the OP described. You can also use:
open -n -a /Applications/Spine/Spine.app
