  • Looking for program for unity game, spine vs anime studio

I didn't want to open up a thread especially with this kind of a question but I cannot find anywhere a good conversation on one or the other. They similar but maybe are vastly different in key areas that matter when it comes to having such a program for making 2d sprite based games with bone animations in Unity.

I am not an animator by trade but this program has intrigued me for ever and now I am ready to get one or the other (AnimeStudio is on sale) so it is prompting me to investigate this vs that one again since I am ready to buy. I am mostly a unity developer.

any thoughts? Im pretty curious as well

Well, I gave a look at this Moho/Anime Studio and the first thing I noticed is that this software doesn't seem to be made for videogames. The vector tool and drawing tool in Moho are gorgeous, so if I had to make a short film or such I'd definitely pick that software.

But you want to make videogames right? Spine has the big advantage of storing extremely well images so that you can have thousands of animations with just 4-5 drawings in an atlas, moreover all your animations will be fluid, they can be played in slow motion or mixed together, you can change skins and reuse your thousand animations on new characters, etc. and it doesn't look like this anime studio has these features which in my opinion are a Must.
Although they do have meshes, their way of controlling them didn't seem quite advanced from videos, no weight on meshes, no path constraints, linked meshes, etc.

Last but not least, the price! And this wouldn't make me think twice, the most advaced version of Moho costs definitely more than Spine, and it doesn't include unlimited updates like Spine but you'll have to spend other 200$ every year for updates.

So if you're looking for a software for 2D animating for films, I'd still pick Moho for its drawing tools, but regarding videogames spine is the big winner.
Also this post is not really about unity, it's more off topic talk since is a comparison between softwares, I think this is why you didn't get answers before 😉

Yeah, Moho/Anime Studio is great for show production/non-game stuff (probably not the absolute best choice for everyone. There are others.)
Great controls and features and things. You can also draw right in the program. It has lots of features you could never use in a game engine.
